Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu vs. Traditional Boxing: What’s Right For You?

Both Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu and traditional boxing are a fantastic way to get in shape while learning essential self-defense techniques. Which one is right for you?

What is Traditional Boxing?

Boxing is a combat sport in which two participants donning boxing gloves fight by throwing punches, traditionally inside of a boxing ‘ring.’ Opponents fight until one boxer is ruled the winner. A boxer can lose a match by being deemed incapable of continuing to fight by a referee, getting disqualified for an illegal maneuver, or by ‘throwing in the towel’ and forfeiting the match.

Boxing takes a great deal of stamina, hand-eye coordination, and physical strength. Some classes may involve hand-to-hand practice while others teach techniques on a punching bag. Before enrolling in a boxing class, ask your instructor whether or not you are in a sparring class or a bag-work class only.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu is considered both a martial art and combat sport, with a focus on grappling. Jiu-Jitsu puts a particular emphasis on ground fighting, which is a significant difference from other martial arts.

A Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu program involves techniques to take down opponents, regardless of size or strength differences.

Boxing and Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu Austin – Self-Defense and Fitness Program

Both Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu and traditional boxing classes can provide fitness and self-defense benefits. Both sports involve regular endurance and strength training while teaching students how to use specialized techniques in an attack scenario.

The fundamentals of jiu-jitsu must be practiced with an opponent, while boxing techniques can be learned and practiced on a bag.

When it comes to choosing between Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu and boxing, you may prefer one over the other, depending on how much hand-to-hand combat you want to have.

While both Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu and boxing classes at John’s Gym offers the opportunity for sparring or competition, some boxing classes are bag-only.
